Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

Healing From Trauma Requires More Than Coping—It Begins With Understanding.

Warm, welcoming therapy office representing Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), offering a safe and calming space for healing unresolved childhood trauma, emotional abuse, Complex PTSD, and survivor patterns with Jennifer L. Hillier

Trauma can change the way we think, feel, and respond to the world around us.

Even long after a traumatic experience has ended, your nervous system may continue reacting as though the danger is still present. You may struggle with anxiety, self-blame, emotional overwhelm, intrusive memories, avoidance, or feeling disconnected from yourself and others.

These responses aren't signs that something is wrong with you.

They are often adaptive survival responses that developed to help you cope with experiences your nervous system wasn't able to fully process at the time.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) provides a structured, evidence-based approach that helps people better understand trauma, process painful experiences, and develop healthier ways of responding in the present.

Helping You Understand the Story Behind Your Survival.

I believe people make sense once we understand the story behind their survival.

Trauma changes more than our memories—it can shape the beliefs we develop about ourselves, others, and the world. Many people begin to believe they are unsafe, powerless, unworthy, or somehow responsible for what happened to them.

These beliefs are not character flaws.

They are often the result of a nervous system doing its best to survive overwhelming experiences.

Healing begins when we understand those survival patterns with compassion instead of judgment. As those patterns become understood, new ways of thinking, feeling, and relating become possible.

What Is Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)?

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based approach originally developed to help children and adolescents recover from traumatic experiences. Many of its core principles are also effectively integrated into trauma-informed treatment with adults.

TF-CBT combines trauma education, emotional regulation skills, cognitive restructuring, and gradual processing of traumatic experiences to help reduce the emotional impact of unresolved trauma.

Rather than asking you to simply "move on," TF-CBT helps you understand how trauma has influenced your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships while building practical skills for healing.
